Little Village Gardeners Coalition
The mission of the Little Village Gardeners Coalition is to work with the community to demonstrate that it is possible to cultivate fresh, healthy vegetables in community gardens in Little Village, and to work together to achieve common goals. The coalition focuses on improving access to healthy food for Little Village families in order to improve community health and reduce the prevalence of chronic disease.
In 2012, a group of organizations and leaders involved with local community gardens began working together to hold collaborative events and to share resources and knowledge. In 2016, this group began to grow in membership, meet more regularly, and formalize a mission and structure. It has built momentum and become a space for each member to share their ideas in order to develop collaborative efforts focused on growing healthy, organic food. The group develops a yearly calendar for activities that range from large community events such the Annual Harvest Fest and the Seed Swap, to workshops focused on compost, bionutrients and raising chickens. Members meet on a monthly basis.
